U-M selected to host seven NCAA events

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has selected the University of Michigan to host seven postseason events — the 2019 and 2022 NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Regionals, 2020 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championship, 2021 NCAA Field Hockey Championship and the NCAA Women’s Golf Regional, NCAA Water Polo Championship and NCAA Wrestling Championships in 2022.

The gymnastics, field hockey, water polo and golf events will all be held on campus in Ann Arbor, while U-M will partner with the Detroit Sports Commission to host the wrestling championship at the new Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.

“We are grateful to the NCAA for entrusting the University of Michigan to host these championship events,” said Warde Manuel, the Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics. “We have phenomenal facilities, a dedicated staff and a long history of hosting championships. We look forward to welcoming participating schools, student-athletes and fans to Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan.”

Michigan has previously hosted 16 NCAA championships in eight different sports on campus since 1932. The upcoming men’s gymnastics, field hockey and water polo events will be the fifth, sixth and seventh in Ann Arbor since 2005.

    Student-athlete graduation reports remain strong

The University of Michigan’s student-athlete graduation rates were once again above national averages as the NCAA released its Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) reports for all NCAA Division I institutions. In addition, nine of Michigan’s teams included in the report earned perfect GSR scores.

Michigan raised its four-year average GSR to 90 percent, which is 1 percent higher than last year, two points higher than in 2014, and 11 percent higher since 2010. U-M’s four-year rolling average FGR remains strong at 80 percent.

Among Big Ten Conference schools, Michigan tied for the second-highest GSR with a 90 and tallied the second-best FGR score of 80. Only Northwestern’s scores of 97 and 91 were higher.

University of Michigan softball head coach Carol Hutchins was named the inaugural recipient of the espnW Pat Summitt Coaching Award. Honoring the legacy of the legendary Tennessee basketball coach, the award was created to recognize annually a coach who “exemplifies the character and courage of Pat Summitt.”

The winningest coach in NCAA softball history, Hutchins entered her 33rd season at the helm of the Wolverine softball program during 2017. She has led the Wolverines to the Women’s College World Series in 12 of the last 22 seasons, and, in 2005, the Maize and Blue became the first program east of the Mississippi to claim the NCAA national championship when it defeated UCLA in the championship series. Hutchins’ squads have also captured 19 Big Ten regular-season titles and nine Big Ten Tournament championships, and qualified for the NCAA Tournament 24 times (1992-93 and 1995-2016).

With a career record of 1,484-478-4 over her 33 seasons a head coach, Hutchins owns more wins than any other coach — in any division — in NCAA softball history. She is also the winningest coach — male or female — in Michigan Athletics history. She was inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2006.
