Payment Certification Letter/Assessment Letter/Estimate Letter

Certification Letter

A Certification Letter confirms the charges and methods of payment for a specific term. All charges to be certified must be fully paid on the student’s account. There is an eight-business-day waiting period from the time the final payment has cleared before the completed forms will be available.

Assessment Letter

An Assessment Letter provides a summary of charges that were assessed to a student account prior to the application of payments or financial aid.

Estimate Letter

An Estimate Letter provides an estimated cost of tuition, fees, room and board, and international health insurance before any charges have been applied to the student account. These letters use the figures from the student’s previous terms and historically tuition charges have increased yearly so may not be an exact cost. Two types of estimate letters can be requested:

  • Current Academic Year Estimate: Provides estimated costs for terms within the current academic year.

TL11 Canadian Certification Forms

The TL11 Canadian Certification Form can be requested as early as January 1st, following the end of the calendar year for which certification letters and the TL11 form are needed. Note that TL11 forms cannot list the USD dollar amount from waivers. This form must also be completed by the Registrar’s Certification Office, after which the forms will be sent to your University of Michigan email by the Registrar's Office. Please be advised that the University of Michigan is unable to provide tax advice. For any TL11 form or tax-related information, please refer to the  Canada Revenue Agency website.

An IHI Letter details only the charges for international health insurance that have been assessed and paid for a specific term. This is usually requested for student accounts that have been charged solely for international health insurance, such as those of visiting scholars.
