Cancellation of Debts Due to Total and Permanent Disability or Death
Total and Permanent Disability
If you are totally and permanently disabled, you may qualify for a total and permanent disability (TPD) discharge of your federal student loans or TEACH Grant service obligation. If you receive a TPD discharge, you will no longer be required to repay your loans or complete your TEACH Grant service obligation.
*Beginning 7/1/2013, borrowers seeking a discharge based on total and permanent disability will apply directly to the Department of Education Nelnet Total and Permanent Disability Servicer. Their website is https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/disability-discharge
Death
In the event of the borrower's death Student Loan Collections requires a death certificate (original or copy) in order to cancel all debts held by the department.
