Deductions / Garnishments

Deductions / Garnishments

There are two types of payroll deductions - voluntary and involuntary.

Voluntary Deductions

Voluntary deductions include your cost for the benefits coverage that you have, such as health, dental and LTD. Voluntary deductions also include the convenience deductions you have requested, such as United Way contributions, or purchases at Computer Showcase.

Involuntary Deductions

Involuntary deductions are those which neither the employer nor the employee has control.  Once served, the employer is required by law to deduct a certain amount of the employee’s pay and send (remit) it to a person or government agency to satisfy the employee’s debt.  The impacted employee will be provided a copy of the garnishment or levy.

NOTE: All involuntary withholding requests should be addressed to The University of Michigan, Payroll Office, G395 Wolverine Tower-Low Rise, 3003 S. State St., Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1279
