New Mcards & Orientations

Ann Arbor Campus Mcards

Student | Employee | Temporaries | Contractor/Visitor/Vendor | Alumni | Retiree

People requiring Michigan Medicine building access must obtain a Michigan Medicine Mcard.

A government issued photo ID (i.e., U.S. driver's license, state ID, military ID or passport) is required when being issued an Mcard. People wearing sunglasses, hats, caps, bandanas, etc. will be required to remove them before their photo is taken.

Student Mcards

Online photo submission is available for new Ann Arbor first year/transfer/undergrad international students and new Ann Arbor graduate students.

Generally, new students will obtain their first Mcard free at an ID Issuing Station or first year students receive it during their orientation.  Students must be matriculated and term activated. New students will not need a form to obtain their Mcards (except for Medical, Nursing, PIBS and Pharmacy students requiring Michigan Medicine access).

Students who have a previous Mcard will be required to turn it in to obtain the student Mcard, otherwise a $20 replacement fee may apply. Students who still have a valid unexpired student Mcard can continue to use that card until it expires. Student Mcards are valid for five years. Undergraduate and graduate Mcards both simply indicate STUDENT.

Employee Mcards

New employees will generally obtain their first Mcard free after their official start date. Faculty and staff may also obtain their Mcards at an ID Issuing Station with a completed online Mcard Request and Change form by their department if their employee affiliation is not in the Mcard system (prior to their start date).

People who have had a previous Mcard will be required to turn it in to obtain the employee Mcard, otherwise a $20 replacement fee may apply. Employee Mcards are valid up to five years. The university department or unit name will print under cardholder's name but not their title. Employees with multiple appointments will choose the most appropriate single department/unit name to be printed on their Mcards. There is not a means of printing multiple department/unit names on Mcards.

U-M Temporaries

(ManPower, Kelly Services, etc., see next heading)

U-M unit are required to complete an online Mcard Request and Change form for individuals hired as temporary employees from either U-M Temporary Staffing Services or a U-M department for their first free Temporary Mcard. People who have a previous Mcard will be required to turn it in to obtain the new Mcard, otherwise a $20 replacement fee may apply. Temporary Mcards are valid up to one year.

Campus Contracted Temp, Contractor, Vendor, & Visitor Mcards

Ann Arbor U-M units are required to complete an Mcard Request and Change form for these individuals.  They will need to pay $4.00 for the Mcard unless the unit sponsors it with a valid shortcode. Mcards are valid up to one year.

People who have had a previous Mcard will be required to turn it in to obtain the new Mcard, otherwise a $20 replacement fee may apply. To replace expired Mcards, an ID Issuing Station will require new Mcard Request and Change forms, $4.00 and the expired Mcards.

Alumni Mcards

Alumni can obtain an Alumni Mcard at any ID Issuing Station (except for the Michigan Medicine Key & ID Office). ID Issuing Station staff will verify Alumnus status and require a payment of $20. Alumni will not need to complete any forms.

Alumni Mcards are valid for five years. Alumni Mcards do not have any implied benefits or access. Expired Alumni Mcards are not required to be turned in to an ID Issuing Station for a new Alumni card, although each new Alumni Mcard requires a payment of $20.

Retiree Mcards

University retirees, including professors emeriti, from any U-M campus can obtain their first Retiree Mcard for free from the Shared Services Center (SSC) ID station. A completed online Mcard Request and Change form by unit management or Human Resource retirement letter is required for the production of the Retiree Mcard before retirement. No documentation should be required if seeking a Retiree Mcard after retiring.  Retirees will be required to turn in employee Mcards to their department on their last day or when the Retiree Mcard is issued.

Retiree Mcards are valid for five years. After five years, retirees can exchange an expired card for a new card. Expired Mcards must be turned in, otherwise a $20 replacement fee will apply.  If a replacement fee is required, retirees must make payment via credit card using the following link and evidence of payment must be provided (printed receipt or photo) with the request for a new Mcard.  IMPORTANT: When submitting a credit card payment, place the word "Mcard" in the "invoice" field.
