Philip Hanlon, the Donald J. Lewis Professor
of Mathematics and vice provost for academic
and budgetary affairs at U–M, was
selected as provost and executive vice
president for academic affairs effective
July 1, 2010. Hanlon, who came to U–M
in 1986, served as the associate dean for
planning and finance in LSA from 2001
to 2004, where he played a lead role in
budgeting and academic planning.
Jeffrey K. MacKie–Mason, a founding
faculty member of the School of Information
(SI), became its new dean effective
July 1, 2010. MacKie–Mason, the Arthur
W. Burks Collegiate Professor of Information
and Computer Science, also served
as associate dean for academic affairs in
SI. He is a professor in the Department of
Economics and the Ford School of Public
Policy as well.
Edward Silver, the William A. Brownwell
Collegiate Professor of Education at
UM–Ann Arbor, was named dean of the
School of Education at UM–Dearborn.
His three–year appointment began July 1,
2010. While in Ann Arbor, he also served
as chair of the Educational Studies Program
and as associate dean for academic affairs.
Silver’s area of specialization is mathematics
education.
Ronald Zernicke, director of the U–M Bone
and Joint Injury Prevention & Rehabilitation
Center, was appointed dean of the
U–M School of Kinesiology, effective January
1, 2010. In addition to directing the
center since 2007, Zernicke is a faculty
member in the Department of Orthopaedic
Surgery, the Department of Biomedical
Engineering, and the School of Kinesiology.
