A Letter of Authorization from the sponsor is required to document the sponsor's commitment to pay designated education expenses for a sponsored student. The Letter of Authorization must specify the covered expenses and the period of time these expenses will be paid for by the sponsor.

Examples of covered expenses that are typically included in the Letter of Authorization include:

  • Tuition
  • Miscellaneous Fees
    • Registration Fee
    • Central Student Government Fee
    • Student Legal Services Fee
    • School & College Government Fee
    • University Union & Rec Fee
    • Course Fees
    • Lab Fees
  • Room and Board in the U-M Residence Halls
  • Orientation Fee
  • International Health Insurance

Due Dates

The sooner the letter is received the better, since early notification prevents late fees from accruing. It also allows a sponsored student better information about what expenses he or she will be expected to pay and eliminates unnecessary follow-up by the sponsored student.

Additional Notes

If the letter is sent directly to the student, he or she must complete any required information and submit it to Student Financial Services before the due date to avoid late fees. SFS will then apply a conditional third party placeholder credit on the sponsored student's account for the covered expenses as long as the letter is received by the due date. Again, be aware that the balance owed is subject to late fees while it is outstanding.
